IT’S TIME TO PRICE OUT POLLUTION.

Making polluters pay for their emissions is the fairest way to reach net zero at a price society can afford. That's why we’re calling for the Government to put a proper price on pollution, and to use the revenues to support people through the low-carbon transition. Our target is 100,000 signatures to trigger a debate in Parliament in advance of COP26 in November 2021.

STEPHEN FRY’S MESSAGE TO THE PRIME MINISTER.

“If you have the courage to make polluters pay, it will save many times more people than have died during the pandemic. Support for the plastic bag tax rose after it was implemented and it was the same with other measures like the indoor smoking ban. It just requires leaders to lead. And now is the time.

When polluters lose their advantage, investment flows to innovative green projects, which consistently bring more jobs and growth. Please, put a proper evidence-based price on pollution.”

OUR MISSION.

Fossil-fuel related air pollution kills 64,000 people in the UK every year, yet the Government continues to provide annual fossil fuel subsidies of £10.5 billion, according to the European Commission.

To drive progress against the UK’s climate targets, the Government must phase out fossil fuel subsidies - including free pollution permits - and introduce a carbon price on producers of greenhouse gas emissions. Designed to make polluters more accountable for the damage they cause, a ‘carbon charge’ will encourage industries and organisations to reduce their carbon emissions, and could raise £27 billion for the economy.

Crucially, the Government must ensure the carbon charge does not unfairly impact those who cannot afford to pay, using some of the money raised to support low income households through the low-carbon transition.

A carbon charge is the fairest way for society to price out pollution and achieve net zero. We need to show the Government that the public supports a carbon charge.

about the campaign.

The Government has pledged to make the UK carbon-neutral by 2050, but has not yet put a comprehensive strategy in place to achieve this ambition. That’s why we started the Zero Carbon campaign, and that’s why we’re calling for the Government to introduce carbon pricing more broadly across the UK economy.

We need to start accounting for the true costs of fossil fuel pollution. Pricing carbon dioxide (and equivalent greenhouse gases) across our economy - and using the revenue to compensate households for increased costs - is the fairest and most effective way to reach net zero at a price society can afford.

We’re running a nation-wide campaign to drive a minimum of 100,000 signatures to the UK Government and Parliament Petitions platform, ahead of COP26 taking place in November 2021.
